Craig Dawson is expected to be in serious contention to be part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this summer’s European Championship.
This is according to West Ham fan James, who called Sports bar to express his opinion that the loaned Watford is the most successful England defender available to Southgate at the moment, apart from John Stones of Man City.
Dawson, 30, has certainly made his mark at London Stadium since joining the Hammers on a one-season loan deal following Watford’s relegation.
David Moyes wants to make this change permanent in the summer and Dawson certainly makes that proposal all the more likely with a series of impressive displays.
The last of them arrived in the Hammers win 2-0 against Leeds on Monday nightt, with Dawson also scoring his fourth goal of the season as Moyes’ men maintained their impressive recent run.
Speaking after the game, a delighted Moyes said: “We’re not there yet with a permanent deal but his performance, attitude and determination are still worth it.
“We brought him in and it took him a while to get started, but now he’s arrived, his experience was very important to us and he also added goals.”
And James was certainly in a jubilant mood when he called to speak to Andy Goldstein and Jason Cundy at the Sports Bar on Monday night – uttering a bold cry to say the least!
He started, “I said that and your producer sounded a little shocked to be honest, and I think you could be too… Dawson for the euros!
“Is there a more fit central defender, other than Pierre Pierre, that Dawson at the moment? Give me one? “
Clearly taken aback, Sports Bar co-host Cundy replied, “It won’t happen, is it?”
James replied, “I know it’s not … but it’s only because we’re West Ham.”
Cundy, sticking to his original point, added, “Let’s praise him, but that’s pushing him!”
James just didn’t have it and adamantly stuck to his original point of view, saying: “I can’t think of a more English center-back than John Stones right now.”
Former Three Lions forward Gary Lineker even took to Twitter earlier in the evening to suggest Dawson has turned into none other than Real Madrid talisman Sergio Ramos! Some praise, indeed.
Get into the conversation Mr Goldstein as the die-hard Manchester United fan has suggested Harry Maguire himself is in fairly decent form.
Again, James didn’t have it. He asked, “Does he play as well as Dawson?”
Cundy eventually made him calm down, as such, to his credit with another suggestion: “The boy [Ezri] Konsa at Aston Villa?
“Yeah, I like it to be fair,” James confessed.
And when it comes to this summer’s showcase tournament, Cundy believes the former Charlton and Brentford defenseman himself has a decent chance at making the Southgate Three Lions’ final team.
Cundy concluded, “He’s as good as anything I’ve seen on a regular basis this season… I think he’s definitely in the squeak.”
So that raises the question: Dawson or Konsa? You choose!
